The web at a glance: A very well done website that explains the Internet from a surfers AND "newbie" webmasters point of view.  ....Internet 101

Advanced tutorials and help guides: by the University of Illinois. Quite often tutorials written by users and instructors are more easily understood by the "newbie" than those written by the software author(s). These by the University of Illinois are very well done, cover the subjects of graphic design, operating system folders, apple, windows, digital movies, publishing to servers, more! Internet 201

Domain name(s):  The websites internet address. Learn about domain names, how they work, how to get one. Here is a link to a very good article by Christopher Heng. He has some very interesting information on his website, The Site Wizard.com

How to Register Your Own Domain Name

What this "School" is about: eNEWS Webmaster School is for those that learn by themselves.  That is, just dig in and "learn by doing!" Following is a list of the basic skills that a "Newbie" Webmaster must have in order to make usable websites. The Internet is loaded with free tutorials and eBOOKS that inform and teach "how to".  The most effective search terms to enter into a search engine is just what you are looking for. EG:  "Tutorial for cpanel" , etc. etc. Try it ! Use our search engine at top of page, it's just our own private "google". We will be adding links to this site as we grow.

1. An understanding of how the Internet works, start with "The web at a glance" above, then look up on search  for more info. Also an understanding of how your computer file system works.

2. How to use "WEB PAGE EDITORS".  The most popular are the "WYSIWYG" Editors, (What You See Is What You Get) that are mostly descendants of the original  "NETSCAPE" Editor. The modern version is FREE and may be downloaded from  MOZILLA.org , the latest version is SeaMonkey  .. make sure you get the version with "composer" window, this is the web page editor that we use, most of our websites are made with this basic editor.  This website was made entirely with composer.  We like this WYSIWYG editor because it is the standard that most others copy.  There are other web page editors, such as "frontpage" and "DreamWeaver", but they are quite expensive and just as difficult to learn. Here is a link to one Tutorial for Mozilla composer. And another from The web site wizard.
How to Design and Publish Your Website with Mozilla Composer

3. Learn how to do "Graphics".  Just about any photo and Image editor will work, we use a free program that is really quite simple and easy to learn.  It will edit size, crop, add text to photos, edit videos, change file extensions. Check out  irfanview.com  for a free download.

4. A working knowledge of the most popular and easy to learn computer "code language" HTML (HyperTextMarkupLanguage).  This is the computer code that tells your "Browser" what to put on your Monitor Screen and where to get the photos, text files, all the different parts that make up a website.  The official website for HTML code standards is:  W3Schools.com  (W3 stands for World Wide Web). This site has an excellent tutorial to learn HTML code.

5.  The server or host files and how to "Upload" files thru the "Public_html" port (this is the "front door" to the server or "Host" file system) and the FTP (File Transfer Protocol) or the "Back door" to the server. A very good, easy to understand utility  for bulk file upload to server is "Filezilla".  By far the most popular server side control panel is "cPanel".  This has a number of auto load public domain "free" programs or "scripts" that are very easy to load into your file manager.  Look for tutorials for this popular program.

Here is a very useful FREE website that has a LOT of useful information. Please do not be overwhelmed by all the information, you are looking at what takes most people 4 years of University to learn! You are encouraged to start making your own first website, visit "newbie" webmaster forums and ASK QUESTIONS !
